Educators immediately worried that students would use the chatbot to cheat by trying to pass its writing off as their own. As schools move to adopt policies around students’ use of the tool, many are also beginning to explore potential opportunities – for example, to generate reading assignments or coach students during the writing process. For K-12 schools, this year also marks the end of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funding program, which has provided pandemic recovery funds that many districts used to invest in educational software and systems. With these funds running out in September 2024, schools are trying to determine their best use of technology as they face the prospect of diminishing resources. School closures impact not only on students’ learning, but also on their health and well-being at critical developmental stages, with long-lasting repercussions. A recent survey by Ministry of Health and UNICEF found that, among 4,374 health centres across all 34 provinces, 58 per cent reported difficulty in providing school-based vaccination programmes.

Globally, between February 2020 and February 2022, education systems were fully closed for in-person learning for141 days on average. In South Asia and Latin America & the Caribbean, closures lasted 273 and 225 days, respectively.
